my life: the breakup

Currently doing a auto-bio series, hoping to reflect, learn, and grow...and for you to get to know this blogger better!  To catch up read:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
So there I was, back in Minnesota after a brief two-week whirlwind road trip to and from Portland, back into the arms of the 'love of my life.'

October 2002
Supposedly.  Keep in mind, we had only just said "I love you" one month before, and had only known each other a total of three months.

If this was a fairy tale we would now 'live happily ever after.'   The end.

But this is not a fairy tale by any means...or the end of the story.

Nor did I think it was, even then.  I had to be practical, even in the frenzy of new love.   I called up my manager at the shoe store and asked for my job back.  Done.  I contacted the college I had been taking classes at the year before and enrolled in only two classes.  After all the moving and emotional drama, I felt like I needed a little break from a full-time class load.

moving into our tiny apt - kitchen view
Next, I needed a place to live.  So I did something I had never, ever imagined I'd do: moved in with my boyfriend.  Or rather, we found and rented a tiny little apartment together.   The top of a house - a teeny, tiny house.   Tiny kitchen, tiny office, tiny bedroom, reeeeally tiny bathroom.   No living room.  Paul's ginormous TV was situated next to my really crappy futon.  We are both fairly short people...so we managed to make it work for the four months before he moved back to Kentucky.  We split the rent and all costs down the middle.  I would never have let a guy support me financially that I was only dating.  Nor did he offer, being very practical about finances...and women.

I never thought I would live with anyone before marriage.  Neither of us had before, and neither of us did after.   My parents weren't thrilled.  {remember, my dad=pastor.} But I was an adult, and at the time it just seemed logical:  we spent nearly all our time together anyway...so why pay for two apartments?  Especially for only a few months.

It was great.  We got closer and even more in love living shoulder-to-shoulder in the ramshackle apartment.  We didn't do a lot of going out, so as to save money.  We just enjoyed being together -- ordering pizza, renting movies, and watching TV.   Our landlord, who we referred to as Crazy Tim, lived downstairs and was a devout, passionate Christian, from a 'banner-waving' 'speaking in tongues' sect. He even had a horn {think Biblical-times type of horn} that he would blow when he was feeling particularly joyous.  {We woke up many a Sunday morning to that horn.}  Crazy, but loveable, Tim was skeptical at first about renting to us, given we were not married.  But "future hubby" was able to charm him, as he does everyone.
I remember September 11th, 2001, living in that apartment.  I am wrapped in a comforter on the futon.  TV is on.  I watch without really knowing what I am seeing.  Slowly things unfold and the first person I call is Paul.  Did he see? Did he hear?  Yes, yes...so terrible.  I cry, thinking of losing him so tragically and suddenly.  I pick him up from work at 4pm and we hold each other for a very long time.
Life was simple during those months.  We worked, I attended classes, and we spent time together.  I had never felt so in love and close to someone.

But December loomed on the horizon, like the end of a good book.

December was when he would move back to Kentucky, to finish school.  I looked into transferring to UK...but only half-heartedly.  I loved Paul, with all my heart...but for some reason I could not commit to moving.  Something nagged at me -- saying we were still too young.  I couldn't imagine getting married any time soon, and he couldn't either.  We never talked about marriage.

What would happen if I moved?  Honestly, given our age and the short time we'd known each other, I figured we would break up, and I would be stuck in Kentucky.  I mean, what would I do with all my shoes???
paul's company christmas party - days before he left
Christmas was bittersweet.  We had the most wonderful little celebration in our tiny apartment.  Paul got us a little snowy white tree, with white lights, and we spread out our carefully purchased and wrapped presents underneath.  I remember vaguely wondering if he would give me a 'promise ring.'  Instead, my main gift was a beautiful leather journal, engraved with a private message written in Latin.  Better than a promise ring - a sign of how close we had become.  He got me, as they say.

I remember watching him drive off.  Forever?  I knew we would break up, in my heart of hearts.  I knew we were too young and too passionate for a long distance relationship.

And we did break up.  About a month later.  I visited him in Kentucky, and we had an amazing time together.  I met some of his best friends, and attended a couple of his classes.  We even had a wild party in his condo.
my beloved tries his best to teach me 'the beer bong.'
But, in the end,  I had to be honest with him...it was too hard.  I couldn't do it.  The feelings we had when we were with each other were so strong...and then to get ripped apart repeatedly would not be good for either of us.

Paul, as always, was much more optimistic about it working long-term.

So it all came down to me being firm -- I could not do it.  It would be too distracting.  It would be too heartbreaking, wondering when he would meet someone else.  Meeting other people myself.  I couldn't do it at that point in my life.    I wanted to focus on getting my degree.  Finally finishing school, as I was barely halfway done.  I could not do it.

Truth be told, neither of us could have.
So we ended it.
Thus began my next chapter: College: Part 2

we have a walker!

For weeks I have been insisting to our friends and family {and anyone who will listen} that my ten-month-old Cormac is nearly walking.  Then the little guy would take a few over-zealous steps and tumble to the ground rather unimpressively when I would try to prove this statement.  Or worse, slump to the ground in a fit of tears and refuse to show his new moves at all.

However, this weekend was a turning point.

He now can walk all the way across a room before collapsing into one of our embraces - or to the ground.

The lady at our church's playroom even confirmed, when I asked if he had "tried to walk" at all, that, yes, "He is a walker!"

Trying to catch this amazing feat on camera has been challenging, to say the least.  He is less of a "walker," more like a "runner-then-tumbler" - moving too fast for me to ever hit "record" on time.  I have about a million videos of him careening to the floor, rather than walking.

So here are some still shots.  My only proof that, yes, we have a walker.

Wow -- look at the focus and sheer determination on that face.

I can't lie.  Watching this boy develop and turn into a walking, talking 'human bean' has been the most incredible, fulfilling experience of my life.  I'm sure all parents can relate...you feel like you are witnessing a miracle every day.

Oh, and he started picking his nose.

so now who?

What seems like ages ago I posted about who Baby Cormac resembles most: myself or Hubby?  Read that post {here.}

Now that he is past the nine month point, let's revisit the topic, shall we?

Here is me - my nine months photo:

And here is Cormac, nine months.
 Look, we have the same creepy baby hands!
This is me on my 1st birthday.
I was still rather bald, and clearly enjoying that cone!

...and here is Cormac, clearly wanting to enjoy that camera strap:

Here is my adorable husband as a babe,  getting his long baby locks trimmed...
{I have no idea how old he is, but he looks less than a year???}
that guy does not look like a barber!
...and Cormac, with his own long baby locks:
And finally,  Hubby on his first birthday.
 Isn't he so sweet and happy?  And look at that hair!!!

Come on...he looks a little like me.
He got my giant dome/forehead.
The hair is clearly from his Dada, though.

Happy Wednesday!

easy guacamole

There are a lot of lists floating around out there regarding things that everyone should know how to make, from memory, when they leave the nest.

 I knew how to make exactly zero things from any of these lists when I left home and went to college.  In fact, I knew zero when I got married.  Especially not from memory -- yeah right.
I was petrified of making anything for anyone.  The perfectionist in me didn't want it to turn out badly, so I just never tried.  I've since completely changed my attitude -- and learned to LOVE trying!
The fact is, cooking and baking take practice, and some failure.
Hopefully my kiddo will have some practice under his belt by to time he heads off to college.

So what should he know by the time he is 18?
The overachiever in me say, "Everything!"
The realist in me came up with the following so far:

1. guacamole
2. tomato salsa
3. chocolate chip cookies
4. a good burger
5.  a grilled cheese sandwich

To me, that seems like a good foundation, but I'd like to come up with a solid list of ten.
Help me out with this one, my lovely blog friends,
in the comment section below!

*  *  *  *  *
Anyway, here is how I make easy guacamole.  Not sure if there is such a thing as "difficult guacamole."
Am pretty sure it is always pretty easy!
Besides, these are things I seem to always have around the house, which makes it
"convenient guacamole. "
:)

What you need:
3-4  ripe avocados
1 red onion
several tomatoes {I use 2-3 Roma}
fresh cilantro {or one tablespoon dried}
juice of one lime
salt and pepper

1. Cut the avocados length-wise and spoon out into a large bowl, removing pit.
2. Add chopped onion and tomatoes.
3. Add lime juice and cilantro.
4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
5. Mash to desired consistency.
I like mine on the chunky side, rather than really creamy...
but that is up to you!

Serve with tortilla chips as an app,
or alongside the sour cream with tacos or quesadillas.
Pure yumminess -- and healthy, too!

So...what would be on your list?

pixie cut

I finally chopped my hair. I've been wanting to do for a while, having admired pixie cuts for years, but always felt maybe my face was just too round.  ???  Anyway, decided to just do it.
I went for the longish version,
inspired by these gorgeous {round-faced!} ladies...

Do I like it?  Yes.

Now I want it even shorter! Then I think I would love it.

Cormac and Hubby like it, too...
which is good, since they have to look
at me every day!

Ever chopped your hair short?
Did you love it?
Have a hard time parting with your long locks?

my life: portland

Currently doing a auto-bio series, hoping to reflect, learn, and grow...and for you to get to know this blogger better!  To catch up read:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
After falling in love for the first {and only} time, it was with a heavy, questioning heart that I began my journey driving across the country to Portland, Oregon.

Don't get me wrong -- I was still really excited.  My heart was full of adventure...yet tainted with sadness over the fact that I might have just left the love of my life back in Minnesota.  I certainly had never felt the same way with any other guy I had dated.   So happy and safe and yet really, really dizzy in love.

My brain tried to argue with my heart:    "You are only 20 -- too young to give up opportunities for some boy you have barely known two months!  If it is really love, you will end up together, despite the distance."

the day before I left
During our goodbye, we did not promise anything.  We talked vaguely about him flying out to see me in a couple months -- if I wanted him to.  We said we would email.   We did not say we would try to make a long-distance relationship work.

We just said I love you...and goodbye.

I drove across Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana -- listening to Dixie Chicks, Dave Matthews, and a whole lotta country that reminded me of him.  I was alternately elated, then heartbroken, then elated again.

After stopping several days to visit my sister and brother-in-law in Kalispell, Montana, my sister and I continued the journey together.  She was going to help me get settled at my new college.  We stopped in Seattle for a day and a night and hung out.  Then we made it to my new college in Portland.

sister and I in seattle
I remember being excited...and extremely stressed.   So many new things to deal with.   I moved into my dorm, met my sweet roommate, and began the process of getting acclimated.  Attended all the "opening week" festivities -- a big dance {so fun - I was one of the last to leave the dancefloor!} flag football games, etc. etc.  Then I started classes the second week.

There were a couple boys I met and seemed interested in me -- the new girl.  One even cooked me an Italian dinner, took me to one of the many beautiful Portland rose gardens...and listened to me talk about Paul.  Poor guy.

In fact, I brought him up with everyone I met.  Like he was inextricably part of my life, even though I now lived over a thousand miles away, and we technically were not still "together."

I was probably known as:  "the new girl from Minnesota who clearly still has feelings for her ex."
Every time I got an email from him my heart leapt.  We joked around, and wrote about everyday occurances.  Said we missed each other.  Tried to keep it light.  He booked a plane ticket to Portland to visit me.  Maybe it could work.

But still...every day I wondered when he would stop emailing.   I wondered when his feelings would inevitably start to wane.  I wondered when he would meet someone else.

I started feeling sick to my stomach every day.  Like I was missing an opportunity.  Like I had made the wrong choice.   Fellow students and friends tried to talk me out of it.  Tried to rationalize with me.  Several very vehemently tried to convince me to stay.  But even though I loved the city and I truly liked all the people I had met, it was an argument they would never be able to win.  My heart knew what way I was headed.

I had to know if Paul and I were meant to be, and we needed more than two months to really know that.

After two weeks in Portland, I asked the dean to give me a full refund for my classes.  I explained that I couldn't stay there.  I missed home too much.  I wanted to move back to Minnesota.

Something in my pleading blue eyes convinced him.  I was released of all financial obligations.  I packed my Neon back up.  I said my goodbyes.  I cranked up my Dixie Chicks.  I pointed my car back toward the Midwest.

It broke down fifty miles outside of Portland.

{Insert interesting story about me being rescued by a redneck mechanic with a full gun rack in the back of his truck.}

yes, I did ride in this truck up into the hills to get my car fixed for cheap.
Once the car was fixed, I drove nearly non-stop.  It hadn't sunk in yet that when I got back to Minnesota I would have no job, no apartment, no clue as to what I was going to do about any of it.

What I would have was Paul.  He had flown home to Louisville for the weekend, and I picked him up from the airport. As soon as I saw him I knew I had made the right choice.

I didn't know the rocky road ahead.  I didn't know it would be full six years and many breakups (including one broken engagement) later before we finally ended where God wanted us to be.

All I knew is that, right then, in that moment, I had made the right choice to move back.  For him.  For us.

No regrets.
after portland - together again
What did we do with the next four months before he moved back to Kentucky?  Did our love last...or fade like the summer?  Let's just say, it lasted beautifully...until it didn't.   {spoiler alert...}

Up next - my life: the breakup.
